Same child returned from lunch today with a speck-sized hangnail and quickly escalated to a wail of "It's bleeeeeding! I need a baaaaaand-aid!" "Yes, I can see that it's gushing blood," I replied. "We may have to call the custodian to mop up." My sarcasm was lost on her, as she agreed with me. I was to drop everything and get a band-aid -- which I did.
On the way to the cafeteria for lunch, another child earnestly suggested that everyone should have to genuflect before eating their lunch. (She didn't actually say "genuflect"; she just gave a demonstration.) I tactfully told her that I didn't think a requirement like that would go over to well in [public] school.
Later on she couldn't find her library book and was becoming quite upset. When we finally found it, she told me "I think the Lord helped us find it!" (Kind of reminds me of my mom. She'd say, "Which of you spilled cocoa on the counter and didn't wipe it up?" We'd all brush her off: "I don't know. It wasn't me …" and exasperated, she'd snap "I suppose the dear Lord did it!")
Ah, it's good to be back!

Cute. A world where everyone genuflects prior to eating sounds fun to me!
Hey, Buzzwig -- time for a new blog post! I had to laugh when I saw that your favorite number is 32. Back when Anna was in grade school, she and a few other neighbor kids had a game where anything you asked them, they'd respond in robotic voices "32". We would torment them by asking, "Do you want to go get ice cream?" They'd look at each other, and you could just tell that one of them wanted to break. But "Lord of the Flies" mentality ruled, and they'd say, "32!" Fun times …
Out of the mouths of babes, right? I would have such a hard time not cracking up or just cracking all the time. I'm sure they're glad you're back, too.
Bathroom play can be hot.
Honestly, I don't understand playing in the bathroom. They stink, especially the boys' room. But they like to go in and climb the stalls, or they fingerpaint the mirrors with soap, or drape garlands of paper towels all over everything, or stop up the drains in the sinks so that they overflow. Once I had a student who (it was reported) flushed a banana down the toilet. Ridiculous.
I think I still have that Art Linkletter book, Kids Say the Darndest Things, somewhere. I don;t have small ones around anymore and kind of mis how their little minds work.
kids and what comes out of there mouths... cute kids...
