Kids ... or Cadillacs?

The Big Three

I'm Changing My School's Name to Chrysler
is the title of an essay by Seattle middle school teacher Jesse Hagopian, posted on Common Dreams.
I am going down to Washington, D.C. to ask for a handout.

My industry is falling on hard times and needs at least $34 billion to cover basic operating costs—but I assure you the emergency aid isn't just for me and my associates. The truth is my industry is too big to fail, and if it were to go under it would have disastrous effects for the economy and millions of Americans lives.

No, I am not an automaker executive from one of the Big Three (General Motors, Chrysler, Ford)—I teach social studies to 13-year-olds and the Public Schools are my trade. (read the rest)
Watching the pigs belly up to the trough (with apologies to real pigs everywhere) over the last 6 weeks has been disgustingly predictable ... or predictably disgusting. Where is the help for "Main Street" that everyone was talking about during the election?

How'd that old bumper sticker go...

"It'll be a great day when there's plenty of money for schools, and the Pentagon has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber..."

Yeah. Exactly.

And AIG has to hold a bake sale in order to take their poor executives to a spa. Pardon me while I wipe a tear from my eye.

Brilliant essay. I feel angry when I see one.two, or three F-16 jet fighters fly over me from my local airport. Gosh, what do they cost? $20 million each? Let's sell just one and give the proceeds to our school district instead of having cuts in art, strings, etc. Of course, even in the school industry, the "executives" in school headquarters don't seem to be feeling the pinch of these cuts.

A while back I saw that it was possible to buy old Soviet era tanks online. I say we sell off some of these F16's for the schools. But then, what would they be used for? That worries me a bit. How about to museums where we can view the folly of "our" war-making ways?

What is a red diaper baby?

Pagan -- I shouldn't assume that people know what that means. It is a child of American Communists. I've mostly seen it used for children of a certain era; my mom was born in 1922.
